Making History Together
This year’s conference will feature the talented members of MACPA as our moderators and speakers. These challenging times have offered us opportunities to think outside the box and MACPA is doing just that. The subjects for our Roundtable sessions are not only timely but necessary in helping your publications to stay healthy.
We are offering different tracks: Publisher/General Manager & Sales Manager.
Below is a summary of each of the Roundtable Sessions. Attendees are encouraged to go to any of the sessions offered regardless of the track.
Publisher's/General Manager Track
MACPA Techcom
9:00 - 9:45 a.m.
|
As one of our strategic initiatives last Fall, we set out to create a committee to help members learn and improve upon their website presence; improve the MACPA website; create a standard of excellence by which member websites would be evaluated and certified based on a set of criteria; increase profitability on member websites; and train salespeople for internet sales.
Our first session will focus on creating a committee with possible subcommittees to work on this strategic initiative. Everyone is welcome to participate and be a part of MACPA Techcom. |
Website Workshop
10:00 - 11:45 a.m.
|
Is your website feeling a bit sluggish? Needs a facelift? Want some advice on how to increase traffic to your website? Then bring along your laptop, bring along your admin info to access your website to make changes, and roll up your sleeves for the Website Workshop. Associate members who specialize in website design and IT services will be on hand to share their knowledge and recommendations. THIS IS A HANDS-ON workshop. |
Credit & Collections
2:00 - 2:45 p.m.
|
Sixty Days or Ninety Days, when and how do you handle a slow pay, no pay customer? Who is responsible for collections? How do you handle no pays with your sales staff? These questions and more will be addressed at the Credit and Collections roundtable. A must attend for everyone.

Creative Ways to Control Expenses
3:00 - 3:45 p.m.
|
The past months have been challenging ones for all of us. We have experienced advertisers cutting their budgets 25% to 50% and others going out of business. We have been able to weather the storm with creative ways to control expenses with new technology, shifts in employee responsibilities, savings with utilities and insurances. Have you thought of everything possible? Find out what others are doing at the Creative Ways to Control Expenses session. |
What's Happening on Capital Hill?
4:00 - 4:45 p.m.
|
Legal Notices, Litter Law, Fair Competition in Digital Advertising, National Healthcare Reform– What do all of these have in common? Issues we need to be aware of and informed. Lobbyist, Jim Haigh will be on hand to share his thoughts on these and other issues affecting our industry. He’ll share the importance of being involved in your community government to curb the possibility of any legislation, being approved without your knowledge, such as Do Not Litter laws. |
Sales Manager Track
Time Management
9:00 - 9:45 a.m.
|
Scheduling, Cool Calls, Travel, Ad Pick Ups, Proofs…How do you make the most out of your day. What system works best for you? Franklin Planner and electronic devices provide you with a way to keep track of your schedule. When it comes down to the everyday grind, how do you handle those interruptions and unexpected events? |
MACnet Classified & Your Sales Team
10:00 - 10:45 a.m.
|
What if one of your sales team sold a MACnet ad every week? That would mean your company would generate $12,350 a year for one classified. What if you sold 5 a week? $61.750!! There are advertisers in your publication that can benefit from network advertising. Bring along your publication and we’ll show you who they are and how to convince them to advertise with MACnet. We’ll give you tips and tools on how to motivate your team. |
The Big Picture!
11:00 - 11:45 a.m.
|
Advertising in the classifieds is only the beginning of selling the networks. Advertisers who would benefit from display and free standing inserts can provide you and your staff with even more revenue opportunities. With minimums of 1,000,000 households for inserts, you are looking at your publication generating $1,000 in commission. That’s money in the bank!!! |
Meet the Associate Members
1:00 - 2:00 p.m.
|
Get to know the associate members in our lively roundtable session. Collect a piece of history from each of them while visiting their booth and discover the opportunities they provide you and your publication. |
Coaching & Motivating Your Sales Staff
3:00 - 3:45 p.m.
|
“Sorry, I’m not advertising this week.” “I’ll have to cut down my ad to half the size. Don’t have the money for our regular size ad.” “Oh, I don’t have the ad copy ready. Can you stop by tomorrow?” These are just a few samples of what every salesperson faces on a regular basis. After awhile they need a bit of coaching and motivation to keep going. This roundtable session will provide you with the opportunity to share ideas on what you and others are doing to keep the troops motivated. |
Successful Sales Meetings
4:00 - 4:45 p.m.
|
It’s 9:00 a.m. on Monday morning and time for another sales meeting. Have your sales meetings turned into another boring lecture and waste of time? Learn what others are doing to create successful meetings and make them interesting, useful, and positive. Share ideas for starting the meeting on time, keeping everyone’s focus on you and off the pda’s and their own personal schedule, recognition of movers and shapers, and how to make the most out of a sales meeting. |
We're looking forward to seeing you at the Conference with all your questions and ideas.
One-on-One Sessions
with David Crawford |
Have you ever talked with a media buyer and scratched your head wondering where they were coming from…….or frustrated because they won’t pick up a call or answer an e-mail, yet they are working with publications all around you?
Whether you answered yes to any of these questions or not, help has arrived. David Crawford, our strategic partner from Standard Rate and Data Service (SRDS), will be at the Fall Conference to work with you ONE ON ONE…….answering specific questions regarding your challenges. He will also have relevant market data on how his subscribers (media buyers and planners) are looking at your market in the SRDS database.
Bring your questions and let a media buyer, with close to a dozen years experience in buying newspaper, share with you his experience. |
